A recent report presented to the Hawaiian Homes Commission suggests that geothermal energy potential near the Maunakea and Kohala mountains on Hawaiʻi Island may have "the highest probability of viable electricity generation."
This report (Item C-4 on the August 21, 2023 meeting agenda) was provided by a Geothermal Permitted Interaction Group, which the Commission established in March 2023.
The report points out the Humuʻula region on Maunakea and Upper Kawaihae on Kohala as potential geothermal activity sites, with Humuʻula being singled out as the most accessible option.
The Permitted Interaction Group (PIG) was formed to analyze and propose strategies related to possible geothermal development on Hawaiian Home Lands, as the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is entitled to all royalties from geothermal projects located on these lands as per State law.
